Event Format for Cubs Box Kart Racing
- The event may take place on a flat course with at least two bends (no downhill racing is permitted).
- Figure of eight is allowed, but a competent marshal must be on hand at the cross over.
- The figure of eight will have a white line to divide the two team, each lane is approx. , 1.7 metres wide.
- If a kart’s wheel crosses the white line during a qualifying heat, the team will be penalised 2 points (at the track marshal’s discretion). During the knockout stages (Shootout onwards ) if the kart wheel/tyre touches the line it will be disqualified and take no further part.
- The distance from start to finish will be between 100metres and 150 metres.
- The start and finish lines do not need to be in the same place.
- The start of the race will be a controlled standing start.
- If a heat has just one kart, the racing will be against the clock. 35 seconds or less will apply to get 3 points. More than 35 seconds will get one point.
- If a kart fails to finish the heat or goes the wrong way on the circuit, the team will score zero points.
- During the whole day, ALL teams will move around the event area at walking pace only. Failure to do this will result in a penalty to teams score .This will be 3 points deducted.
- At all events the final decision will be of the clerks of the course, the lap scorers and the scrutineer.
- No cubs, scouts, leaders or members of the public will enter the racing area during any part of the event. This includes the starting area and finishing part of the raceway. The only exception to this is to assist cubs or kart at the start. They must leave the start area once the countdown starts.
Cub Teams
- Teams to be made from any cubs from the pack, no age restrictions
- During racing the kart will be driven by one and propelled by one or two cubs.
- A team can consist of between three and six members from the same Cub pack.
- If a Cub pack has two nights and two akelas then this is classed as two packs, but one akela for both nights is one pack, so one team.
- If a pack enters two teams cubs may only race in one team. No changing from A to B teams. If a change is seen both teams will be disqualified from the rest of the day .
- A second team can be entered at the same time as booking the first ONLY if you won the Supreme the previous year .
Box Kart Construction
- The karts must be of wooden chassis construction with a minimum wheelbase (i.e. from centre of axles) of 60cm (.600mm)
- The overall width must not exceed 90cm (900mm). This is to include push bars and any air foil or wings used. (This measurement is to be measured at the CENTRE of axles)
- A push bar must be fitted to the rear of the kart. The minimum height of this is 750mm.
- No other restrictions are made to size of karts.
- Steering is to be by rope ONLY fitted to each side of a centre-pivoting axle. (String OR CORD is not allowed)
- Wheels and tyres can be from either a pram/ pushchair, bicycle type or wheelbarrow, but will be a minimum of 152mm/ 6inch in diameter. If rear bicycle wheels are used, they must have the rear sprocket removed.
- Karts must have four wheels and tyres. (No tricycles)
- Axles should be one piece and made of steel only. (No plastics or aluminium).
- Axles must be fitted using nuts & bolts and not nails. The front axle should be bolted to a piece of wood between the axle and the chassis.
- The front axle MUST have axle stops to limit the amount of turn . This is to stop the drivers legs getting trapped between the chassis and turning axle assembly . A simple rubber door stop works very well .
- A driver may only sit in the upright position, no lying down to steer.
- Nails are NOT permitted in any part of the construction of the kart – bolts and screws only.
- A cub should not be able to come out of the kart sideways. If a seat with sides is not used, a side bar or body panel should be fitted to prevent this happening.
- Any body work used is to be made of wood only. This is to include any wing or air foil used.
- Karts will have no sharp edges or protruding fixings.
- All karts must be painted or finished (i.e. Vanished).
- The Karts name must be clearly written on the kart visible to the track marshals.
- All karts must display their pack details (i.e. 16th Croydon)
- Any pack that has previously won a major box kart event must display this on their kart. (i.e. 1965 county champions).
- Where possible, construction should keep within the spirit and history of traditional box karting and use recycled or scrap parts.
